In Realplay I facilitate small groups of participants and work with them to explore solutions to real work-based problems.
- An individual participant briefs me on a person (usually a work colleague) with whom they are experiencing communication problems. This briefing lasts just 5-10 minutes and then together we enact an exchange where I take the part of the person with whom they wish to resolve the problem.
- As I assume the characteristics and behaviour of this other person, the participant will usually behave with me exactly as they do with them – and, as a result, achieve the same negative outcome they are used to getting. I then facilitate the participant trying out different approaches to that which they habitually employ; I also facilitate helpful coaching from the observing colleagues. We replay the conversation, or parts of it, trying these new approaches and reflect on how successful they are.
- Participants frequently voice their amazement as to how I am “just like” the character they describe and how useful they find this exercise for planning future interactions with that person.
